Question: Why Is Starlink Bad?

According to SpaceX, Starlink will offer speeds of up to a gigabit per second at latencies from 25 milliseconds to 35 milliseconds.

That’s much faster than old-school satellites.

HughesNet, the grandpa of satellite Internet, offers download speeds up to 25Mbps and upload speeds up to 3Mbps..

Mostly, yes. Except if you’re an astronomer. Or just generally enjoy the unpolluted night sky. The Starlink satellites currently in orbit are brighter than anyone really expected, and they’ve already spoiled some serious astronomical observations.

Starlink is the name of a satellite network that the private spaceflight company SpaceX is developing to provide low-cost internet to remote locations.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has cancelled its launch of 60 satellites into space tonight due to poor weather conditions. The Falcon 9 rocket was due to lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in Floria at 4.59pm (GMT). But, for the second time, the launch has been called off because of the weather.

Legal action could be used to stop Starlink affecting telescope images. A group of astronomers has called for legal action to stop the launch of vast numbers of satellites designed to beam high-speed internet around the world until their impact on the night sky can be assessed.

5G is a system that uses lots and lots of small cell phone towers to connect directly to your phone. Meanwhile, Starlink connects to a dedicated receiver on the ground to connect to the satellite. Once the receiver has a connection, it can be connected to a wifi router and provide service. Thats just mmwave 5g.
